On the 4th of December, we went to the Nanjing University Exhibition with Ms. Hadley. We visited the Wu Weishan Cultural Figures Sculpture Gallery of Nanjing Museum, and we learn more about the art and have fun there.
The title of the exhibition is “Wu Weishan Cultural Figures Sculpture Gallery of Nanjing Museum”. All of the sculptures were made by Wu Weishan. The head of the “sleeping child” in the present exhibition is an example. It finished in 1998 and the size of the a
rtwork is 11cm x 7cm x 81 cm, a small sculpture of bronze. Of course, the color of the artwork is bronze. It feels like ice-cold because of the material and the line is smooth, and the neck in the rough state.
I feel very peaceful and comfortable when I saw this artwork——sleeping child. I remember that the curator which in charge of the museum just told us the story of the source of the “sleeping child”. The portrait was modeled on a visit to a friend house. The child had fallen asleep with its mouth opened because it had difficulty breathing through the nose. Mr. Wu couldn’t wait any more and finished this artwork immediately because the baby’s lovely face attractive him extremely and deeply. Therefore, Mr. Wu wanted to use this sculpture to show us the children are the hope of the nation. I asked myself “did I also looked lovely and did I like an angel when I was young？” Thus, I thought whether Mr. Wu have recalled the days of childhood to him or not.
I do like the artwork——“sleeping child” extremely. It gives me a feeling of purity. As an angel, this artwork may represent the peaceful and hopeful. In the other hand, Wu Weishan used the different technician to the traditional technician. Anthony Stones said “the method which up till now has not been a method is the painter’s best method”. We can see, Mr. Wu’s technician is considered. The sleeping child is most successful to Mr. Wu，and this artwork won the highest awards. Just imagine everything just like the child’s face, innocence and goodness. Such a wonderful world it is. I think other people might appreciate the artworks, ether. He is the wonder in our country, even though in the world.
Professor Wu Weishan is the Director of the Institute of Fine Arts of Nanjing University, and studied Psychology at Peking University, EKWC and Art of the University of Washington, USA. From his artwork, we can find he is good at the sculptures. He has already created sculptures of more than 200 famous people, Chinese and Western. Some of these are realistic, others are enjoyable. This enjoyable is both between traditional and contemporary. Thus, Wu Weishan’s artworks are almost traditional and contemporary.
From the exhibition of the Mr. Wu’s sculpture, I learned how to appreciate an artwork that different to before. Such as we should have 3 steps to critique about the artwork which is DESCRIBE, INTERPRET and JUDGE. Of cause, we also need to know how the artist’s feeling and what the intention that artist thinking.
