Volunteer Experience

Virtually, volunteer work was not very general in China, on the contrast, western country do this well. In my opinion, volunteer work was a very hallowed. No selfish, but love. We know that judge a student not only on the exam marks. It should be according to the students’ ability and integrated development. Thus, the Chinese education — putting more attention on the study and ignore the practice is very boring and insipid. Therefore, western people have chance to get the jobs more than Chinese people, and they can adapt the environment of the society better. As a result, I decided to do be a volunteer to make up the shortage.

Last year, I have been a volunteer for the drama “The Taming of the Shrew”. There were many students willing to help Ms. Hadley and Ms. Mistchrich. Hence, we have divided into three groups to do our job. Our group’s job was to paint the bricks on the wall. Firstly, we should find many smooth boards to build as a wall. Then, we carried the boards to the entrance of GCA. After that, we brushed white on the board as backdrop. Then we didn’t draw grey on the board mixed with dark brown and green until the board was dry, because we wanted to let the board looked like the old city walls. Then, we drew irregular quadrilateral in brownish-red to make it looked like bricks. In the end, we used grey again to make the “wall” look old. The process of painted was very difficult, because we are all green hands. We tried many times to mix colors, so we could make sure the wall looked like a real one. During our experience, we failed many times. Sometimes the color of the bricks was too dark; sometimes the color of the bricks was too light; sometimes the bricks looked too dirty; sometimes it looked too simple… There were too many mistakes. Luckily, we find the right way at last. Finally, we waited the wall dry, then, the walls were done. When we finish it, incredible, it really looked like an old wall. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked like the real one. All of us felt successful and proud. When I pass by the wall, I always proud to tell my friends that it was made by me!

The volunteer work I only did 3 times for the wall, but I learnt a lot from it. I know that we should do everything should step by step, and we should do things carefully and patiently. Pay more attention on the quality, not on the speed. No matter how small or big the thing is, we should attach importance to the weaknesses and put more effort on the practice. I realized the importance of volunteer work. It could help me to get more impression of the society; adapt the environment of society; know the status of society. I believed that I have learnt many useful skills during this volunteer work.
